What is THC?

What does weed do to you?

In order to understand what weed does to you, let’s take a look at one of its main components. Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is one of the more than 85 components that make up the Cannabis Sativa plant. As we have seen previously in “CBD vs Marijuana: What’s the difference”; THC is famous for being the main psychotropic that produces psychological alterations in the body. It is often thought that Cannabidiol (CBD) -based products can generate the hallucinogenic effects of THC but, on the contrary, CBD counteracts its properties thus inhibiting its psychoactive qualities. Going back to the subject: What does weed do to you? What is THC? How does it affect the body? Can I have serious complications from its consumption? How long does it last in the body? Is THC present in products to CBD base? We propose to answer these questions so that when consuming Cannabidiol oil-based products you are aware of its properties and free from prejudice.

There are people who consciously consume THC and there are even different formats to do it: in brownies, with rolling papers; and the list goes on. Although this is not legal in several countries of the world, it is worthwhile to bring to light as much information as possible to know the pros and cons of its consumption.

How does THC affect the body?

As we mentioned, THC is the psychoactive component of the Cannabis Sativa plant, the same one from which CBD comes, but what does this component hide? THC produces a series of adverse effects such as:

-Alteration of reality
-Changes in mood
-Increased appetite
-Drowsiness
-Hallucinogenic effects
-Reduction of short-term memory capacity
-Anxiety

Impaired concentration
-Increased heart rate
-Dry mouth

Can I have serious complications from its use?

While there are a lot of unwanted effects, there has been no recorded history of someone dying from THC use. Although, if there are complications, THC can be counteracted with CBD. But not everything is bad, THC also has a number of substantial benefits. The CANNA Foundation, dedicated to scientific research and analysis of Cannabis, found that THC has therapeutic properties analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

To understand a little more about how THC works in the body, it is necessary to explain the chemical reaction that it generates in our organism to understand how these adverse effects originate. THC is a substance that adheres to cannabinoid receptors found in neurons of the nervous system, which allows it to activate its psychotropic component and generate the alteration of mental and motor functions.

How long does THC last in our body?

Returning to the question at hand, there is no exact way to determine this point, but it depends on a series of variables. Furthermore, the most important indicators have to do with physical conditions (type of metabolism, body fat) and how much THC has been consumed.

Generally, those who consume THC with rolling paper, the liver breaks down its compounds and stores them in cells where they can last for a long time. Even after time, these components are released back into the body and therefore THC levels can increase long after consumption.

Is THC present in CBD-based products?

In theory, yes. THC, being present in the same plant where the CBD is found, when extracting the oil or derivatives, THC is found in minute quantities. Even, for the commercialization of these products, by international regulations they must have less than 1% THC.
